FALL 2018 you say? Yep, sorry kids but summer break is nearly over and it’s time to go back to school. But it’s not all doom and gloom – amongst the hundreds of ResumeCompanion $1,000 scholarship applicants there’s one very lucky winner due to receive this amazing cash prize, straight into their account, to spend however they like! Before I announce the winner I would first like to say a massive thank you to everyone who applied. The level of creativity in both the content and the formatting & layout of your applications truly astounded me! If the whole college thing doesn’t work out for you guys, please rest assured you can definitely get a job writing resumes.
After sifting through hundreds of submissions, the competition judges certainly had a hard time picking a winner. Though slightly laborious work, reading the resume of such leaders-of-men like Jesus Christ, Donald Trump, Sponge-Bob Square-Pants and Miley Cyrus, really helped motivate us. We were also rather intrigued by the creativity put into writing a backstory for certain characters – I didn’t realize Oscar the Grouch was Steve Job’s roommate at college, nor that prior to becoming a dumpster dwelling grouch, had actually led a stunning 20-year career as CEO of a huge Technology & Innovation organization. I also wasn’t aware that Minnie Mouse co-owns and manages a record label alongside Snoop Dogg, nor was I aware of the fact that the Blue Ranger from Power Rangers had dropped out of business school in order to become a super-hero. Great stuff guys, please keep it coming! One thing to note, however – we were quite surprised at the number of people who submitted the resume of Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy, the content of which simply read: “I am Groot, I am Groot, I am Groot”. For anyone planning on applying next year, this will definitely not win you $1,000. Take note.
Below you can see our top 10 finalists, including this year’s winning resume: Harry Potter, written by McGill University student Jenny Guan who’s double majoring in Economics and East Asian Studies. We have to say in the 5 years we’ve been running the scholarship this is probably the best submission we’ve ever received! Well done, Jenny. We wish you all the best with your studies! To everyone else, thanks again for taking part. Remember, this is an annual competition so if you weren’t lucky this time you’re welcome to apply again for the Fall 2019 RC scholarship.
