1. Writing Out a Career Objective
A career objective acts as a first impression to recruiters, so it’s critical that it highlights your abilities, achievements, and intent. In the sample resume above, the applicant clearly states his qualifications and how he would be a good fit for the desired position. Let’s take a closer look:
- “Effective sales manager with 10+ years of experience in regional territory management, sales team training, and marketing brand strategy.”
Here, the applicant summarizes his involvement in the industry by including his tenure, duties, and capabilities. The applicant then goes on to bolster his credibility by mentioning a major career achievement that directly applies to the role:
- “Consistently exceeded monthly sales goals, resulting in annual multimillion-dollar increases in profits 6 years in a row.”
Lastly, he concludes his career objective by affirming his credentials and stating his intent:
- “Seeking to leverage my proven track record of maximizing company revenue in order to fulfill the National Sales Management position at your company.”

2. Demonstrating Your Professional Experience
The body of your resume should be a concise outline of noteworthy achievements and career highlights in your current and past roles. Try to avoid exhaustive lists and long-winded explanations, as the objective is to provide relative experience that demonstrates your aptitude and knowledge of the position.

Descriptive verbs, like “analyze,” “facilitate,” and “mentored,” are also of importance, since they signify crucial leadership characteristics.
2. Quantify Your Experience
Have you ever heard someone say, “Don’t tell me, show me?” This also applies to your resume. Instead of telling hiring managers what you did, you should show them by providing concrete examples and numbers. This way, you demonstrate how effective and successful you are. This final section of your resume is where you include skills and/or certifications that you couldn’t elsewhere. Anything from basic computer literacy to specific character traits or even hobbies can apply, as long as you present them in a way that better qualifies you for the position.
