1. Use key action words

Take a look at what words are included in the job description. You’ll probably see a lot of verbs – “manage,” “organize,” “report,” “analyze,” and “design.” Like the resume, your cover letter needs these, too. Use action verbs in the section of your marketing assistant cover letter where you are explaining your related experience in more detail.

For an even better cover letter, include a variety of buzzwords that describe how you achieved results or how you were recognized for it.

• General verbs: manage, organize, report, analyze, design, create, build, teach, train, write, plan, program, quantify
• Results-oriented verbs: produce, increase, initiate, overhaul, implement, reduce, increase, redesign
• Merit-based verbs: honor, award, promote, select, laud for, receive a bonus for, recognize, choose, credit

2. Elaborate on the experience and skills from your resume

The cover letter is a great opportunity for you to explain more in-depth about how you contributed to your previous jobs. In the sample provided, we took one of the bullet points from the marketing assistant resume and added more details to it in the cover letter:

• Oversaw all social media and content marketing for Independent Credit Union marketing campaigns, promotions, and blogs for customers, gaining over 10,000 followers for each platform over the span of only two months
• Managed and reported on the performance of key digital marketing and direct response campaigns, achieving a 36% increase in search prominence
• Collaborated with two internal departments to follow the trends and demands of target markets such as first-time homebuyers and auto finance, overhauling the brand image to better capture and convey value proposition

3. After proofreading, have someone else check your letter for mistakes.

Checking over for grammatical and spelling errors should be a no-brainer. Your marketing assistant cover letter should also be written in business letter style, with a salutation, body, and closing.

After reading your cover letter out loud, make note of what you need to fix in our proofreading checklist below. Check off each table for everything that you’ve done when reviewing your cover letter. Have your proofreader do it as well for a more thorough check.

Remember:

• Spelling — Run spell check, avoid using words you aren’t familiar with, use a dictionary, read over each word carefully, and have someone else read your cover letter.
• Punctuation — put a period at end of every sentence, use consistent punctuation (e.g. Oxford comma), avoid using exclamation points, keep punctuation marks within quotation marks, and check semicolons and colons.
• Grammar — avoid switching tenses in your cover letter, check for misplaced modifiers, fix any sentence fragments, follow the rules of subject-verb agreement, modify run-on sentences.
• Word usage — accept vs. except / affect vs. effect / assure vs. insure vs. ensure / raise vs. rise / comprise vs.
compose.
• Fact check — make sure all dates are correct, check that all contact information is correct, affirm that all names, titles and places are correct, check that the information on your resume is consistent with the cover letter, and confirm that all research and facts about the company are true.
